Strengthening Eritrean Narratives Through Literature
On February 12, 2025, I had the privilege of meeting with Mr. Berhane G. Solomon, Chargé d’Affaires of the Eritrean Embassy in Washington, D.C., to present my book, Eritrea: The Struggle is Long, and Victory is Certain.
Our conversation underscored the vital role of literature in shaping Eritrea’s historical discourse. Mr. Solomon reaffirmed the Embassy’s commitment to supporting Eritrean writers and ensuring that our narratives are documented from an Eritrean perspective. He emphasized that, historically, Eritrean scholars and writers were often preoccupied with defending the nation, leaving many stories untold. Now, in this new era, it is imperative that we correct misconceptions and reclaim our history through our voices.
He also highlighted the importance of making Eritrean literature widely accessible, particularly to the younger generation and English-speaking audiences. Disseminating these works to institutions and public spaces worldwide will strengthen Eritrea’s presence in the global literary landscape and counteract persistent misinformation.
This meeting was a testament to the power of Eritrean storytelling. As we document our history and struggles, we ensure that future generations inherit an authentic and well-preserved narrative of our nation’s journey.
